Feed Your Deer

Ok, so the sason has just ended and you are doing a little dove and rabbit hunting having a good time. Well, as winter sets in and a few months after your deer are starving. Rule number one for growing bigger, healthier deer is to have an available year round food source for them to eat. If you have a food plot then that will work just fine. You can put out an electric timed deer feeder with a type of supplemental feed or corn. Note that corn is not the most nutritious thing to feed your deer with, but it will do just fine.

Note that if you are thinking that growing big bucks is a quick process then you are seriously misinformed. This whole process will take lots of time. In out hunting club in Washington County Georgia, It took about five to six years.

Cull Bucks

So we have the whole feeding process down in the off-season. Now it is time to learn about culling the bucks that don't need to be going around spreading their genes. Note that this is not always possible in all hunting clubs because many people are not able to tell how old a deer is. It is pretty hard if I have to say so myself. Well, we had some six pointers running around the 12,000 acres that were huge and because of our 8 points or better rule, the oculdnt be harvested. When I say nice six pointers, I mean over twenty inches wide and some really nice mass. They were some monsters. Bucks in my opinion htat need to be culled are deer that do not seem to have the quality of antlers that you are looking for at the age of two or three. You should probably wait untill they are three years old when you make your decision.

Let the little bucks walk

When I say little bucks, I mean little ones as well as the really nice two year olds. You want to let the bucks reach their full potential before you harvest them. That is, until they reach the age of three or four. I know this is hard, it is for everyone, but you will begin to reap the rewards of your labor in the future. Try to use the whole 15 inches wide and at least 8 points. This is a general rule by the QDMA. QDMA stands for quality deer management association and has been proven all over the country. I mean - it only makes sense. If you feed them properly, and let them age, you will begin growing bigger bucks. The deer in the picture was about three I believe, I should have let him go, but that is harder than it looks! Nice buck for south Georgia!
