Sleep Sedation Dentistry

What is Sleep Dentistry?

Let’s face it, there are a lot of people out there that are afraid of making a trip to the dentist. Not only do children fear the dentist, but many adults share the feeling as well. People often associate going to the dentist to pain. The gums are a sensitive area, regardless of your pain threshold. For those out there who have a low pain threshold, going to the dentist can be really uncomfortable. All of the needles and machines can be very intimidating and scary. What if you could go to the dentist without evening knowing you were there? What if you could simply get your teeth cleaned without feeling any pain or discomfort? Well, here is where I would like to discuss sleep dentistry. Sleep dentistry is officially called sedation dentistry. Basically, the idea is that sedatives will allow you to bypass all of the uncomfortable aspects of the visit. With this method, patients with a phobia for going to the dentist can do so in a relaxed state of sedation.

One of the most common questions associated with this form of dentistry is whether or not a patient will be unconscious when they are given treatment. The answer to this question can vary, depending on what the visit needs. Most of the time patients are sedated to a point where they are very relaxed and are able to fall asleep. Another serious question I had on this subject pertained to vital sign monitoring. So, I checked the internet and found that many of the sites had this particular question covered. They stated that vital signs are monitored closely; just as they would in a hospital setting. This was a relief for me.

Another question that I had pertained to what sedatives would be given and how they would be given. The information pertaining to this subject varied greatly. The one common element that I found that was the same with many of them was that any patient attending a sleep dentistry appointment needed to have someone to take them to and from the appointment. This makes perfect sense for safety reasons.

In closing, it seems that sedation dentistry is meant mainly for those that have a serious fear or phobia for going to the dentist. This does not meant that people without phobia cannot get this form of dentistry. Sleep sedation dentistry is a way to avoid the uncomfortable pains of getting a dental checking. To find one in your area, talk to your dentist. You may even find that they offer it as well. If not, the internet may be a decent method of finding a dental practice that does.
